Depending on the previous years dates and the indication of science and technology, it can be expected that, this year Isra and Meraj will be celebrated on 21 March 2020.

What is Isra and Meraj

The meaning of the Isra and Meraj is night journey. The journey that the beloved Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had done from Masjid-Al-Haram (The Great Mosque of Mecca) to Masjid-Al-Aqsa, also known as Baitul Muqaddas (Located in the old city of Jerusalem) in a part of the night. That's called Isra. This story is mentioned in the Holy Quran:
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing." (Surah Al-Isra 17:1)
And the word meraj means stairs, ascending and climbing. The definition of meraj is going up of our beloved Prophet (PBUH). Allah called his friend Muhammad (PBUH) for ascending from the earth to the sky, passing the Siddratul Muntah from the first sky, and called to himself. That is called miraj.

On that night, Muhammad (Peace be upon him) rose up in the sky from the earth. It is also translated as ‘The Night of Ascent’. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) met and spoke to almighty Allah that night. Our prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him has done many events and occasion but meraj is the greatest lessons for the entire humanity.
Knowing the Miraj
Hopefully, now you have got the answer of what is Isra and Meraj. Isra and Meraj celebrated on 27th day of the 7th month of Islamic Calendar (Rajab). This is an important night for the Muslim nation. Because the Prophet (peace be upon him) visited Paradise that night, and brought some gifts from God to us. One of the gifts of Meraj is the five-time prayer.

Reason Behind Shab E Meraj

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) got revelation from almighty Allah at the age of fourteen. After 10 years of nabuwat he went to Isra and Meraj. Before going to Miraj, his beloved wife Hazrat Khadijah (R.A.), and his guardian as well as uncle Abu Talib were died. That time, he was disappointed and suffering sorrow and grief. Allah wanted to make him happy. That's why, Allah sent Angel Zibrail (Alaihissalam) to invite our Prophet (Peace be upon him). That was the reason behind this blessings night journey. In this difficult time, he got an opportunity to directly contact with Allah Subhanahu Wat'ala through Isra and Meraj.
Lailat al Miraj

Story Of Shab E Meraj

Angel Zibrail came with a fastest vehicle called Burak, an animal similar to horse; which was sent by Allah from Paradise. After going out of home, this blessings night journey has divided into two parts. First is, journey on the earth; from Masjid-Al-Haram (Right now Kaaba Sharif) to Masjid-Al-Aqsa (Located in Jerusalem). The leader of the Angel Hazrat Zibrail (A.S.) was also with the prophet (S.A.W.).

The second part of the journey was only ascent. That's mean, going up to the sky. The journey was started from Masjid-Al-Aqsa. Then the Prophet traveled seven heavens one by one and eight heaven to seven hell. After that, he went to Sidratul Muntaha and met God directly and had many conversations. At that night, Allah Ta'ala gave a few gifts to the prophet, one of which is five times daily prayers. That is why it is obligatory for all of us to pray five times daily.

After finishing the long journey, he came back to Masjid-Al-Aqsa from Masjid al-Haram. It takes only a second to reach Masjid-al-Aqsa from Masjid al-Haram. Just think about how fast the vehicle was running. After arriving at Al-Aqsa mosque, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) offered two rak'ats prayers as imam. Where all other prophets, including Abraham, Moses (AS), were present. That is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) is called Imam al-Mursalin, the Imam of all the Prophets. Then two cups were kept in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (S.A.W) chose the cup of milk and said:
Praise be to Allah Who has guided you to the Fitrah (purity and innocence). If you have chosen the wine, your Ummah would have gone astray.” (An-Nasai: 5657)

Meeting With Seven Prophet

Miraj is an important night for all of humanity. It's considered as one of the best journey of our beloved prophet. On that night prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him also mat with previous seven prophet of Islam. As I said earlier, he visited seven Sky. Then he stopped in each Sky and mat with following prophets:

  • On the first Sky, he met with Hazrat Adam (A.S), the first person in the world and the first prophet of Allah. On his right side he saw the soul of paradise and left side he saw the soul of hell.
  • On the Second Sky, where he met with Yahya (A.S.) and his cousin Esa (A.S.), the son of Maryam.
  • On the third Sky, he met with Hazrat Yusuf (A.S.)
  • On the fourth Sky, prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him met with Edris (A.S.)
  • On the fifth Sky, he met with the younger brother of the prophet Musa Hazrat Harun (A.S.)
  • On the sixth Sky, he met with Hazrat Musa (A.S.)
  • On the seventh Sky, the last prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him met with Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S.)

Opportunity To Visit Baitul Mamur

Baitul Mamur is a house that is situated directly above the kaaba. It's the Allah's house that is top of everything, including seven Sky, eight heaven. Like we perform hajj in kaa'ba. Seventy thousand Angel do hajj every day. The angel who once gets the opportunity to perform visit, he will never have the opportunity to perform again until the day of Resurrection. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) asked Zibrail about this place. The the messenger of Allah said:
This is Al Bait- Al-Mamur where 70,000 angels perform prayers daily and who attends it never will never be able to again attend this blessing.” (Sahih Bukhari: 3207)

Opportunity To Visit Sidrat UL Muntaha

After that, the prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) went to Sidrat UL Muntaha. It's a large tree and boundary of Allah. No creation can cross that boundary. That's why Hazrat Zibrail (A.S.) stopped walking and said to the prophet I have no permission to go forward. But our prophet had the opportunity to enter this area. Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) is the only human who pass this boundary. Think about the relationship and friendship between Allah and Muhammad (S.). How lucky we are to be his followers.

Gaining Closeness To Allah

After crossing the Sidratul Munatha, the Prophet (peace be upon him) went near to Allah. There he got close to Allah and had a chance to have a long conversation with Almighty. But the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) could not see Allah directly. It's not possible for any creation to see the Creator in his lifetime. Which we can fully understand from the following hadith.

Opportunity To Visit Jannat and Jahannam

Shab E Meraj 2020
On that journey, the Prophet had the opportunity to visit Paradise and Hell. Upon entering Paradise and Hell, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw all of the blessings, peace and aware the punishment of Hell. Upon entering Hell he realised the dangerous condition. After returning, he informed the people about their dire situation.

Gifts Of Isra and Meraj

The night of meraj is the memorable night of the prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him. On that night he received several gifts from Almighty Allah. Those gifts made this journey more significant for Muslims Umma.

Number one: Daily five times prayers

Number two: Last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah

Number Three: The promise of Allah with his last prophet. What is that promise? That night Allah Ta'ala promised with the Prophet (peace be upon him) that Allah would forgive all sins except for associating with Allah. That is, if one dies without partnering with Allah, then all other sins will be forgiven gradually.

Story Of Five Times Daily Prayers

When the Prophet (sws) came near to Allah, Allah first offered fifty times prayers to his servants. On the way back, Prophet Muhammad met with Prophet Moses. After a conversation between the two, Musa Alayhi Wasallam known about the 50 times prayer. Then he told our Prophet that your followers will never be able to perform 50 times prayers. Then he told our prayers for asking Allah to reduce the amount of prayers. After that our Prophet went to Allah and reduced only five times prayers and made forty five times. Then the same story repeated again and again. Thus he went until the time came five times.

Story; After Returning To Maakka

The night of journey
After completing this great Journey of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he returned to Makkah with his vehicle called Al-Burak. The next morning, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) narrated the incident to all but the disbelievers did not believe it. Instead, they started mocking the Muslims.

Earlier, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never visited the mosque-al-aqsa. So they began to ask the Prophet about the description of Masjid-Al-Aqsa. The Prophet was able to give the correct answer as soon as they asked, thus they asked many questions to the prophet and he answered all of them exactly. Then they said that these answers came from Allah. Finally, they remained unbelievers and did not accept Islam.

Then a group of disbelievers came to Abu Bakr (Radiallahu Anhu) and narrated the incident. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied that these story must be true if the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) bestowed Hadrat Abu Bakr Radiallahu Anhu with the title Siddiq.
