What is Shab E Barat?

Shab E Barat or Lailatul Barat is the significant night for all Muslims around the world. The night is also known as Mid Shaban because it celebrates at the middle of the Arabic month Sha'ban. We observe that night in between the 14th and 15th of Shaban. That night is also known as Nisf Shaban. Nisf is an Arabic word stands for half in English. Shab E Barat is celebrated at the half month of Shaban. That's the reason of named as Nisf. Different countries called it with the different name.

A large portion of Muslims called as Lailatul Barat. Lailun is the Arabic word that means night. The word Barat is a Persian word that means Luck/Good Luck. The English meaning of the Lailatul Barat is the night of Barat. It knows as Nisfu Syaban in Indonesia and Malaysia. Turkish Muslims called as Berat Kandili. On the night of Shab E Barat Muslims seek forgiveness to the Allah by praying and remembering whole night. This significant night starts sunset on the 14th Shaban and ends on the 15th Shaban.

Importance of the month Shaban

As I said earlier, Shaban is the 8th month of Arabic year. Although it's a month from twelve months but it has many virtues. Allah give us this month for asking forgiveness and blessings. Another fact that tells us the important of the Shaban month; on that month our prophet used to fast all days. It's the clear proof of the importance of month Sha'ban. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prepared himself for the month of Ramadan by fasting for the month of Sha'ban, but the sick and the old men are forbidden to fast during Sha'ban. To be sure with the information, read the quotes below.
I never saw the Messenger of Allah fast for a complete month except for Ramadan, and I never saw him do more fasting in any month than he did in Sha`ban” (Al-Bukhari).
Rajab is the month of Allah, Shaban is my month and Ramadan is the month of the Nation.
People neglect this month which is between Rajab and Ramadan, in this month the actions of the people are presented to Allah; so I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting. (Abu Dawood)
When the Middle Night of Shaban arrives, you should stand (Praying) in the night and should fast in the day following it” (Ibn Majah).

Shab E Barat According to Hadith

There is no direct indication about Shab E Barat in the holy Quran or Hadith. But our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took this night very seriously and said to ask for forgiveness to Allah at night. In a hadith of Tirmizi Sharif, Shab e Barat is mentioned, although the rabi of that hadith is not very acceptable.
He (S.A.W.) said: 'Indeed Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He, descends to the lowest Heavens during the night of the middle of Shaban, to grant forgiveness to more than the number of hairs on the sheep of (Banu) Kalb.'" (Tirmidhi: 739)
According to the narration of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), a Hadith found that:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) at midnight of Sha'baan was engaged in worship in such a way that A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was dead. (Al-Bayhaqi & Al-Tabarani).

Shab E Barat Celebration

This is an Islamic recognized night so this night should be in accordance with the Celebration of Islamic Sharia. Before this I would like to tell you one thing, if you do not celebrate this night, then you will not be guilty but if you celebrate like others festival, you will be guilty of sin even it can be bid'at.

Since it is an optional ebadah, different countries celebrate that night in different way. But in most countries of the world, the celebration is started by distributing sweets in the evening. Then all night is spent through prayers, jikir and listening Islamic advice. Last of all, we ask Allah to forgive us for all the old sins and commit ourselves to not commit sin in the future. You can do these worship at home or go to the mosque.

Performing Shab E Barat Salah

Shab E Barat Namaz
Shab E Barat Namaz

Another voluntary prayer is nafl Namaz. Praying Salah can be one of the ways to celebrate the night of Shab E Barat. Before praying, you must purify yourself by doing Odhu. Many people may disagree with one thing about how many rakats should be offered in Shab E Barat prayers.

Infact, there is no specific rule because since it is a voluntary prayer. We will try to offer more prayers. It is best to offer as many rakats you want by praying two rakats in each part, and recite Tashahud after every two rakats and make Dua after four rakats. In this way you can read as many rakats as you wish.

After praying, you should pray to Allah and ask forgiveness for all the sins behind you. There is no difference between the night prayers of Shabe Barat and other prayers, but there can be some difference in the combination of Surah.

In this case, you can recite Surah Ikhlas after Surah Fatiha because Allah has been introduced himself in Surah Ikhlas. If you wish, you can complete the prayer with another Surah, but it is best if the Ikhlas is recited with the Fatiha.

Doing Jikrullah

Ziki is to remember God. If a person remembers Allah, then Allah remembers him. In this regard Allah says in the Quran: Call me! I will respond to your call. And, faith will be refreshed through Zikir. Zikir is one of the weapons of the believers.

The most important thing to do Zikir on Shab E Barat. It's not just about shab E Barat, we should always pray to Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to remember more and more of Allah (S.W.T). Through Zikir, the power of faith increases.

Reading The Holy Quran On Shab E Barat

Reading the Qur'an is of paramount importance in optional worship. Because the Prophet himself said that reciting the Quran is the best worship. By this, it appears that reciting the Qur'an after the obligatory worship is most rewarding. Since Shab E Barat is a night of worship, many rewards will be found in the recitation of the Quran. We will try to recite the Qur'an, be it in the mosque or at home.

Fasting On Shab E Barat

On the 15th of Sha'ban I mean on Shab E Barat, there is no direct hadith has been found concerning fasting in night of Shaba. However, I have discussed earlier that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast for the whole month in Sha'ban, so it may be that 15th date is not mentioned individually. However, there are no rules to follow, it is entirely up to you. If you want to keep it or not, it is not a problem.

Why should we observe Shab E Barat?

Many may think again that the night of Shab e Barat is not in the Quran and Hadith. Why should we observe it? I want to explain you through an story of the prophet.

One day Hazrat Aisha Siddiqua Radiullah Ana (Wife of the prophet) woke up at midnight and saw that the prophet is not in the house. Then she started searching Prophet but could not found. After searching for a long time she found him on worshiping attentively at Jannat-Ul-Baki. That night was the night of Shab E Barat.

At time our Prophet (peace be upon him) gave a hint of the Shab E Barat but did not compel it. This is why the night is considered voluntary prayer. And another important point of this night is that Allah determines the luck of the human beings in this night.

Another important thing is that almighty Allah descends into the lower heavens and tells His servants to call upon Him. If Allah's servants remember Him this night, then Allah will forgive them, so we should not neglect this night.

Conclusion

Although this night is not mentioned in the Qur'an and the Sahih Hadith, Sunni Muslims consider this night to be a night to save the Prophet Noah and his boat from flooding. Others think this night will be Imam Mahdi's birthday. However this night we will worship Allah and recite more and more Quran. I will spend the whole night through prayer and Istegfar.
